Walk: "Walking on the Serra d'Ossa Hermitage Trail"
Points of interest: Aldeia da Serra, Serra d'Ossa, Monte da Virgem Church, Walkways, Ermitas Gardens, Alto de S. Gens, Cork and Holm Oak Forests and Lagar Velho Road
Although the Serra d'Ossa Walkways were only inaugurated in April 2021, they are already one of the must-see places in the Alentejo for all nature lovers. This is because travelling through them allows you to see a very different side of this region in the south of Portugal, which is more associated with vast plains than rugged mountain ranges. The walkways run along the verdant valley of the Ribeira do Monte Virgem, through steep schist cliffs, between Aldeia da Serra and the towering Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte da Virgem, preceded by an extensive staircase with approximately 300 steps. But there's much more to the walk than the footbridges, which is why it's necessary to follow this route, adapted by Caminhando.pt, while still reaching the highest point in the Serra, up to 650 metres above sea level, with 360º views as far as the eye can see!
Level of difficulty of the route: 3 (Scale of 1 to 5)
Route length: 13 kilometres
- We suggest the picnic option, which is the responsibility of each participant
Estimated duration: 4h30
The afternoon highlights:
- Tour of the village of Redondo (castle, pillory, etc.)
- Visit to the Clay Museum
- Visit to the Flower Street Workshops
- Tour of Alandroal
- Group Dinner Suggestion in Alandroal
19th April (Sunday)
Walking: "Walking in the suburbs of Vila Viçosa"
Points of interest: Vila Viçosa, Praça da República, Pelourinho, Estrada Real, Fossos do Castelo, Igreja e Convento dos Capuchos, Fonte do Vale da Rabaça, among others
This walk will take us to see not only some of the most important points of Vila Viçosa, such as its Castle (exterior, moats, etc.), Pillory, as well as the fascinating surrounding countryside, where we highlight the passage on the Old Royal Road, with a connection to Elvas, as well as a privileged view of the wall of the Tapada Real that surrounds the immense property of the Casa de Bragança Foundation and the ruins of the Chapel of Our Lady of Paradise.
Level of difficulty of the route: 2 (Scale of 1 to 5)
Route length: 9 kilometres
Estimated time: 3 hours
Vila Viçosa
Vila Viçosa was built by King Afonso III, who granted it a charter in 1270. It was later donated to D. Nuno Álvares Pereira and in 1422 it was given to D. Fernando's grandson. During the reign of King Manuel I, the town became part of the House of Bragança. It was the cradle of Portugal's fourth dynasty and received a new charter in 1512. As far as historical and monumental heritage is concerned, the castle of Vila Viçosa should be mentioned, in which the medieval fence, towers and gates coexist with the Renaissance fortification (an uncommon example of Portuguese military architecture), which preserves the alcazaba. It is surrounded by a deep moat and two cylindrical turrets and has a quadrangular plan.
- We suggest the option of a picnic or lunch at a local restaurant, which is the responsibility of each participant.
- Possibility of visiting the Castle and/or Ducal Palace
