Walking the Gaios Trail and the Bridges Route

The colourful walkways of the Rio de Horses

From the Praia Fluvial de Vale de Gaios you'll find the famous colourful walkways that allow you to enjoy the surrounding and unique landscape that the Rio de Cavalos conveys: the old mills, its waterfalls and a mystery that reveals itself in enchantment: the river with its sinuous and peculiar bed, disappearing between the rocks and continuing to be heard stridently below them, in large galleries.

On the Route of the Bridges and River of Horses

After the footbridges and the village of Vale de Gaios, stop for a few moments to appreciate the Roman Bridge of Sumes, an architectural work that joins the two banks of the river Cavalos, with a single arch and a perfectly round span, whose deck measures approximately 50 metres in length and 3 metres in width, showing the ingenuity and constructive wisdom of the Roman Empire. It has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1990.

16h30 - Walk to Bodadela - Visit to the Roman Ruins - Interpretive Centre - Pillory

It is a magnificent place that should be visited as it is one of the most important and well-preserved architectural complexes of historical and archaeological value from the “Roman period” in Portugal. You can see the structural remains of the main square of the ancient Roman city, the forum, the monumental arch, epigraphs, the splendid amphitheatre and the bust of a Roman emperor. This monument is classified as a National Monument.

Seville Shale Paths

Sevilha is a small village in the parish and municipality of Tábua, characterised by its old vernacular houses and cobbled streets. The river Cavalos and its beautiful waterfall, the old mills and the medieval bridge stand out. The river Cavalos passes through here, from Touriz to Tábua and flows into the river Mondego. The woodlands that descend into the fertile valley and surround the landscape in shades of green are admirable. edra da Sé - this is a granite agglomeration of high relief and is a timeless icon of the municipality, being a magnificent viewpoint in its own right. Shrouded in stories and mysteries (allied to the figure of João Brandão), the derivation of its toponym is also not consensual: perhaps stone came from here for the construction of the Cathedral of Viseu or Coimbra, and hence the association of “stone for (the) Cathedral”; another possibility lies in the grandeur of the rock complex itself, reminiscent of a Cathedral in terms of its dimensions.

Throughout the journey we enjoy the magnificent scenery along the banks of the river Cavalos and the river Mondego. On the river Cavalos, waterfalls and cascades are a constant when the flow of this tributary of the Mondego increases and exceeds the usual channel.
