Event Description
This proposed walk starts next to the Rio e Maior Municipal Swimming Pool Complex and on a circular route we'll come across various points of interest such as the natural salt pans, the Rio Maior springs, the Sifucel Lagoon, the Serra da Marinha, the 3 spouts fountain and the waterfall of the old power station. Another event not to be missed!
The Springs of the Rio Maior:
The Rio Maior, also known as the Asseca ditch, the Asseca stream, the Azambuja ditch and the Royal ditch along part of its course, is a watercourse that rises in the Candeeiros mountains at a place called "Bocas", near Freiria, in Rio Maior. Along its approximately 70 kilometre course[1], it passes through Rio Maior, Vale de Santarém, Santana, Setil, Ponte do Reguengo and Virtudes until it flows into the Tagus near Azambuja
The Salt Pans of Rio Maior:
The Salinas Naturais de Rio Maior are located at the foot of the Serra dos Candeeiros, three kilometres from Rio Maior. They are compartments - butcher's shops - made of cement or stone, varying in size and shallow, into which the salt water that is drawn from a well is led by watering cans.
Some of the points of interest on the walk
- Rio Maior natural salt pans - Fonte das 3 Bicas - Rio Maior springs - Sifucel lagoon - Power station waterfall - Natural landscapes -
