This proposed walk will take us along an extensive riverside area, where we'll have the pleasure of walking along the beaches to the north of the city of Setúbal, as well as part of the slopes of São Filipe, with its characteristic windmills, passing by the Roman road of Grelhal. Our route also includes the Praça do Bocage and the Convento de Jesus, right in the centre of Setúbal. This is definitely a walk not to be missed!

Albarquel

Praia de Albarquel is located in the municipality of Setúbal, just a short distance from the city, at the foot of the Serra da Arrábida. The beauty of this beach, its long stretches of sand and the extreme ease of parking are the many reasons why tourists come to Albarquel beach.

St Philip's Fort

The Fort of São Filipe was built during the Spanish occupation, beginning in 1582, during the reign of Philip I, as a way of strengthening Setúbal's defence against piracy, which had been a concern since the reign of King Afonso IV, and this king began building the city's first defences around 1350. With the restoration of independence in 1640, King João IV ordered the defences to be extended and adapted to the use of artillery. In the 19th century, a fire destroyed the command house. In the 20th century, classified as a National Monument, the Directorate-General for National Buildings and Monuments carried out restoration work and the fort was adapted to function as an inn. Inside the fort, as well as the old governor's house, now an inn, there is also a chapel with the particularity of being completely covered in tiles by Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes.
