Event Description
The aim of this walk is to enjoy a pleasant walk along the seafront, crossing the municipalities of Oeiras and Cascais, using beaches and riverside paths whenever possible, with fantastic panoramic views. The walk will start at Jardim de Santo Amaro in Oeiras and end at Praia da Rainha in Cascais, so that we can take the train back to our starting point.
To whet your appetite, we'll show you some of the most emblematic crossing points on a route that involves a lot of riverside areas, forts and viewpoints with unique views over the Atlantic, as well as several important heritage sites.
Fort of Santo António da Barra or Old Fort (Salazar Fort)
Built in 1590 by order of King Philip I, it was designed by the military engineer and priest Giovanni Vincenzo Casale, a Neapolitan in the service of the Spanish Crown, who arrived in Portugal in 1589 to fortify the Tagus bar against possible attacks by English ships. The fort, with an irregular star-shaped plan, has two bastions, connected by V-shaped reveals, pierced by cannons, with cylindrical sentries on the corners, which also connect to the outer walls. In the centre is a square fort with a chapel and vaulted barracks, which are protected by a second belt of walls made up of two bastions connected by horseshoe-shaped reveals. Its planimetry is unusual and it doesn't fit in with the building model of the fortresses on the Tagus bar.
By the end of the 16th century, it was already built and ready to receive artillery, and was kept garrisoned and armed until the end of the following century. During the liberal struggles, it underwent some interventions and improvements and received artillery with the respective garrison. During the 20th century it also underwent changes to adapt to its new functions: Tax office to control the smuggling of goods (1897), holiday camp for the Odivelas Women's Institute of Education and Labour (1915-2015) and summer residence for the then President of the Council, António Oliveira Salazar (1950-1968).
