Event Description

At this event we will walk in the heart of the Serra da Arrábida Natural Park, through leafy woods and along beautiful trails, to reach the beautiful area at the mouth of the river, the Quinta and Palácio da Comenda, as well as the picnic area, which is always very popular. Another event not to be missed!

Chapel of St Peter of Alcube:

The chapel already existed in 1596. It belonged to the parish of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda and, with its extinction, was integrated into the parish of Nossa Senhora da Anunciada. Since the 1755 earthquake ruined the parish church of the parish of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda, the chapel of São Pedro de Alcube was the parish church of this parish in 1755 and 1756.

The prior of this chapel and parish in 1655 and 1656 was Father António da Costa Cordovil, a conventual friar of the Order of Santiago, doctor of theology and author of notable sermons, who died in 1679 in the Convent of Arrábida.

Comenda Palace:

The Palácio da Comenda is on one of the slopes of Arrábida, about 2 kilometres from Setúbal, bathed by the Sado estuary, with a private beach and its eyes on Tróia.
The origins of the palace date back to the 18th century, when it was the residence of the highest European royalty. It was rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century by a renowned architect of the time and the story goes that Jacqueline Kennedy took refuge with her children in this palace when JFK was assassinated, which at the time was owned by personal friends of the Kennedys.
Unfortunately, the building has been abandoned since the death of businessman António Xavier de Lima, who owned it (2009), so the entire interior is very dilapidated and vandalised.
