Event Description

In this activity proposal we will walk and visit some of the most fabulous places in the Lago de Sanabria Natural Park, a natural park where water, mountains and large forests (mainly oak) blend together in such a way as to make every corner of it immensely beautiful. For half a dozen days we'll offer you walks with landscapes you'll remember for a long time. Come with us!

These will be some of the most important places we'll visit along the various hikes:

  • City of Chaves (Historic Centre, Castle and Roman Baths)

  • San Martin de Castañeda
  • Ribadelago
  • New Ribadelago
  • Soltillo de Sanabria
  • The Bridge
  • Vigo de Sanabria
  • San Juan de la Cuesta
  • Interpretation Centre of the Sanabria Lake Natural Park
  • Ungilde (Iberian Wolf Recovery Centre)
  • Verin (Historic Centre)
  • Monterrey Castle
  • Natural landscapes

TIME: Departure from Lisbon at 7am on 10th June
RETURN: Arrival in Lisbon at 8pm on 14 June

Sanabria Natural Park

ex-libris of the park is Lake Sanabria, fed by the imposing River Tera. Around 1.5 kilometres wide, 3 kilometres long and 53 metres deep, it is the largest lake of glacial origin on the Iberian Peninsula. At an altitude of 1,000 metres, the lake is surrounded by large peaks, reaching 2,124 metres at Peña Trevinca. Around 22,000 hectares, a large lake, high mountains, many mountain lakes, some waterfalls, including the imposing Sotillo waterfalls, and diverse flora and fauna make the scenery unique. The fauna includes otters (the park's symbol), roe deer, deer, mountain cats, golden eagles and, of course, the wolf that dominates these parts.

This park is located right next to the 68,000 hectare Sierra de la Culebra Regional Game Reserve and the 75,000 hectare Montesinho Nature Park (in Portugal), making it a unique area in Iberia. The Sierra de la Culebra has the highest density of wolves on the Iberian Peninsula, more than a thousand deer and around 500 roe deer.
