This walk takes in various paths and some trails that will allow us to get to know the various fountains of Caneças, as well as their fundamental importance for supplying water to the entire population, not only of Caneças but also of the surrounding area. This is also the site of the Águas Livres Aqueduct, which used to bring water to the city of Lisbon. Come along to another event not to be missed!

The Fontaine Fountain

The first place in Caneças to provide fresh water and where the watermen went to fill their clay jugs was a cave. It was built in 1888 and began operating in 1910. That year, Loures Town Hall repaired and extended it, and the Fontainhas Fountain appeared, built with stones from the top of Caneças which, together with the natural greenery, give it a beautiful and simple appearance. Meanwhile, the same council channelled part of the water into a fountain with two spouts in the central garden, making it easier to access the water for domestic use.

After the construction of the aqueduct of the same name, it was reduced to a spring and a small stream that had been used as a public lavatory. With the aim of increasing the exploitation of the water, works were carried out, but they “did not have the expected results, because the percentage of iron ores in the water increased and it lost its qualities. Its consumption was abandoned”. On the left-hand access wall to the fountain there are nine tile panels by Eduarda Filhó, dated 1997, which refer to the most important professions of the time in Caneças, namely: Veraneante, Lavadeiras, Aguadeiro and Enchedeira. On the right is a panel dedicated to the Band. It was cleaned and restored in 1989 by Loures Municipal Council.
