Event Description
In this event, we're going to take advantage of the morning to go on a walk that will take us up several staircases totalling 2,500 steps, in a real rollercoaster exercise that will take us past places of undeniable interest such as viewpoints, squares, alleys, courtyards, some of them real hidden treasures. Naturally, we'll take advantage of the opportunity to visit some of these places and learn about their culture over the course of more than 7 kilometres. Come along and find out much more about the city of Lisbon.
Casa dos Bicos
The history of Casa dos Bicos begins in 1523, at the behest of Brás de Albuquerque, the natural son of the second governor of Portuguese India, Afonso de Albuquerque. Inspired by the Italian Renaissance and the palaces he found in Bologna at the time, he had a palace built to his taste. But symmetry in the distribution of doors and windows was forgotten. The end result is a house that looks like a portal to an enchanted kingdom.
Church of São Roque
In the 16th century, the site where the church stands was isolated, outside the city walls, and so it was chosen as the cemetery where plague victims were buried. In 1506, a chapel was built here dedicated to St Roque, the patron saint of plague victims. The Brotherhood of São Roque was established, with its own statutes and supported by the royal house, the nobility and the people. In 1553, the Society of Jesus took over the site and had the church we see today built, with the obligation to keep the Chapel of St Roque inside.
Torel Garden
The name comes from a family, probably of Dutch origin, who lived there. In 1886, Manuel de Castro Guimarães had a mansion built with a garden on the hillside, to a design by José Luís Monteiro. The palace was sold to the State in 1927 to house the Criminal Investigation Police, and the garden was given to Lisbon City Council in exchange for the construction of an extension to the palace for use by the police.
