This hike starts next to the Dom Quixote Mill, on the road that connects to Cabo da Roca and enters the Serra de Sintra, and goes through some of the most significant points of the Serra, such as Peninha, the Mosqueiros Lagoon, the Silent Forest or Monte Rodel, with a fabulous view of the Atlantic coast, goes through rural paths and trails of great beauty and descends at the end to the Rio Touro path and back to the starting point. Another event not to be missed with a distance of 26 kilometres, within the reach of great hikers!

Peninha Sanctuary:

Here we can see rocks that make up the Sintra Magmatic Massif. This massif was formed around 80 Ma ago at great depths, and the dominant rock is granite.

In the Serra de Sintra it is possible to see landscapes in which chaotic heaps of huge rounded blocks of rock stand out, constituting what is known as "block chaos". These rocks are essentially granite and syenitic in composition, and the Peninha buildings were built on top of one of these syenitic rock piles. The Peninha Sanctuary is part of an architectural complex formed by the old chapel of St Saturninus (founded by D. Pêro Pais at the time of the kingdom's formation of Portugal and now abandoned) and the romantic revival-style palace, which resembles a fortification, built in 1918.

The present chapel dates back to the 17th century and was founded by Friar Pedro da Conceição. The panelling that covers the interior of the chapel depicts scenes from the Life of the Virgin and was made by different authors. The monumental panels in the body of the nave have been attributed to Manuel dos Santos.

Mount Rodel

Mount Rodel is also called Monte RodeloMonte Rodel is actually two pyramidal granite agglomerations, located practically in the centre of the Serra de Sintra, with a privileged view over the northern slope and the Atlantic Ocean. but the panorama from the top is truly spectacular. Monte Rodel is not one of the highest points in the mountains, but it is an excellent viewpoint over Monserrate Palace and the Colares valley and floodplain.

Mule River Dam

This dam was designed in 1963 by engineer Ressago Garcia and built by Cascais Municipal Council in 1969 to supply water to the municipality. It has a support wall 18 metres high and 192 metres wide, a flooded area of 45,000 m2 and a capacity to supply 23,000,000 m3 of water.
