This activity proposal aims to provide a weekend where tranquillity and adrenaline go hand in hand. This time we're going to Alcoutim, a community on the banks of the Guadiana, in a perfect setting in the middle of nature, where there's no shortage of memories of the smuggling that took place there many years ago. We'll also make the leap to San Lucar in Spain and return by air until we land back in Portuguese territory. There will also be time to visit the castle and explore the town's houses, as well as walks in Pontal and Guerreiros do Rio. Come and join us for another event not to be missed!

Alcoutim

Caminhando will take you to Alcoutim, where one of the first impressions you'll come across is the tranquillity of the meandering Guadiana River, which serves as a natural border with Spain. On the other bank, you can see the Spanish village of Sanlúcar de Guadiana.

The imposing landscape of the river invites you to stroll through the town's streets, discovering in every nook and cranny the historical and cultural wealth inherited from the peoples and civilisations that passed through this region and left us marks and influences that are still visible in our heritage today.

There are centuries of history to tell, confirmed by the navigability of the Guadiana, the archaeological and metallurgical wealth of the region and the struggles of the Christian reconquest and defence of the border.

Sanlúcar de Guadiana

We're going to visit Sanlúcar de Guadiana, which is located on the left bank of the River Guadiana, to the east of the Portuguese municipality of Alcoutim. The white houses of the small town of Sanlúcar de Guadiana slope down to the small river harbour just opposite the Portuguese town of Alcoutim.

The “Castle of Sanlúcar de Guadiana”, also referred to as the “Castle of São Marcos”, is located on top of a hill, dominating the town, on the left bank of the River Guadiana, bordering Alcoutim and its castle on the opposite bank, in Portuguese territory.

Let's get our adrenaline pumping by travelling the 720 metres that connect the two countries by air. The river is crossed at a speed of between 70 and 80 kilometres per hour, literally flying through time, gaining an hour due to the time zone change between the two countries

Warriors of Rio

Guerreiros do Rio has always seen its history and route shaped by the importance of the great Guadiana that passes through here and supplies its people. In fact, this is where the interesting River Museum is located, making the history and particularities of the whole lower Guadiana region accessible to any visitor, particularly fishing. Fishing on the Guadiana has always been an exclusively artisanal activity, aimed at the subsistence of the riverside populations. Its origins probably date back to the Palaeolithic period, when the first traces of human colonisation along the river can be traced.

Roman Villa of Montinho das Laranjeiras

The ruins of this site became known after the great flood of the Guadiana in 1876. In March of the following year, archaeologist Estácio da Veiga carried out the first excavation at the site and concluded that he was looking at a villa Roman.

13:30 - Suggested lunch at a local restaurant

3pm - Tour of Alcoutim and suggested visit to the Castle

4pm - End of activity and return to Lisbon
