Event Description
The oldest human remains found in Almada still survive today, from a Phoenician settlement more than 5,000 years old, but the Romans and Muslims also passed through here. The Arabs gave the town the name "Al-Madan", which means "The Mine", and built a fortress here in the 12th century to guard the Tagus estuary, where the Almada Castle garden is located today. On this photographic tour we'll travel around Almada, getting to know and photographing many of its emblematic landmarks, on a walk with history and excellent panoramic views, with the Tagus as our inseparable companion. our journey. Another event not to be missed!
River Garden
Recovered by the local authority, where the whir of the wind and the rush of the water can be heard in this space, where once there were scuffles between the watermen and the inhabitants when water was scarce in the urban centre. Dom João V ordered the erection of a fountain at this spring (1736), which supplied the ships of the Discoveries.
It is made up of two main lagoon bodies connected by a narrow, sinuous and shallow channel: Lagoa Pequena, which is more inland and shallower, and Lagoa Grande, with maximum depths of around 15 metres.
Christ the King
At 223 metres above the sea, it offers a 360º panoramic view of the Tagus estuary and both banks. It was erected following a promise from the Bishops of Portugal to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, whom they asked to keep the country away from the horrors of the Second World War.
Casa da Cerca
This former pleasure farm once served as a barracks for Junot's troops, where ladies in tight corsets once strolled, can now visit exhibitions dedicated to drawing and areas.
Botanical Garden
Those who sit in the garden's amphitheatre can let their eyes wander over the open landscape of the houses on the two banks (Almada and Lisbon) separated by the river and joined by the Tagus bridges. The garden is located in the former vegetable garden of Casa do Cerco, one of the finest examples of 18th century architecture in the municipality of Almada.
Castle Garden
The Jardim do Castelo, as a space surrounding the fortification to which it owes its name, has always been linked to the concepts of contemplation and festivity. Here you can enjoy sublime views over Lisbon, the Tagus, the São Paulo seminary, the Casa da Cerca or even the Boca do Vento panoramic lift on the Almada cliffs, making this the ideal spot from which to observe the Tagus estuary.
Note: As this is a Photo Walk, the programme may change slightly, depending on the pace and interest of the group.
