Event details

Event Description

On this guided tour, we'll get to know the Santa Cruz neighbourhood, inside the walled part of the Castle of São Jorge, the Church of Santa Cruz, where the royal baptisms took place, and have the unique opportunity to climb the Church Tower and have a 360º view of the city of Lisbon at our feet. We'll also use the rest of the morning for a pleasant stroll around some of the most typical spots in the neighbourhood, such as the Miradouro do Recolhimento. Another event not to be missed!

Church of Santa Cruz do Castelo

Built shortly after Lisbon was taken from the Moors in 1147, on the site of the city's central mosque, the current building is a post-earthquake reconstruction, reopened for worship in 1776, in Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Its bell tower rests on a tower from the alcazaba of St George's Castle. The chancel has a sober carved altarpiece framing a 17th-century painting on boards from the destroyed Chapel of the Holy Spirit, which is also home to the 15th-century image of the Trinity in polychrome Ançã stone. The Brotherhood of St George, once of great importance in the city, was based here.

The Castle Neighbourhood

The Castelo neighbourhood is the geographical and patriotic heart of Lisbon. It was from here that the rest of the city sprouted as it grew and expanded, since the reconquest by the Christians from the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques - the first King of Portugal - in . Crowning the almost millenary existence of the Portuguese people, the Castelo de São Jorge stands imposingly on top of Castelo Hill, bearing the flag of Portugal! This is both the tourist highlight of the Castelo neighbourhood and a must-see for any tourist wanting to visit Lisbon. From the top of the castle, you can't help but gaze down at the view over the Portuguese capital, the waters of the River Tagus as it flows calmly towards the Atlantic Ocean, and Almada, a city on the south bank of the river linked by the famous 25 de Abril Bridge and the Cacilheiros boats.
