Grilo Convent

The Convento do Grilo is also known as the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Monte Olivete and the Igreja Paroquial de S. Bartolomeu do Beato. It was founded in the 17th century by the Barefoot Brothers of St Augustine. After a violent fire destroyed the church, it was rebuilt without being greatly affected by the 1755 earthquake.

In Baroque architecture, it has a three-arched galilee that gives access to the interior. With a single nave, it has three chapels on each side and one on each side of the transept. Inside, the 18th century chancel stands out for its image of Our Lady of Mount Olivete, patron saint of the convent, flanked by images of St Bartholomew, patron saint of the parish, and St Augustine, founder of the order. The 18th century tiles in the sacristy, entrance hall and staircase depict religious scenes, court scenes, riding, hunting and the countryside.

In 1834, with the extinction of the religious orders, the convent became the Recolhimento de Nossa Senhora do Amparo or Grilo. From 1897 onwards, the entire convent area was adapted for the food industry. The convent is classified as a Property of Public Interest.
