Event Description

In this event we'll get to know the Ruins and Archaeological Museum of Carmo “inside out” through a guided tour. We'll also use the rest of the afternoon for a photographic tour of some of the most emblematic places in the surrounding area.

Carmo Archaeological Museum:

The Carmo Archaeological Museum occupies the ruins of the convent of the same name, which was founded in 1389 by D. Nuno Álvares Pereiro to celebrate the Portuguese victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota. Founded in 1864, this museum has since exhibited a collection of medieval tombs (such as the Gothic tomb of King Fernando), statues, Roman and Visigothic pieces and even a couple of exotic and rare pre-Columbian mummies. Part of the Carmo convent was converted into military facilities in 1836.

The church of the Carmo convent (in Gothic style and with three naves stretching 72 metres in length) was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. During the reign of Queen Maria I, the convent underwent restoration work, but the traces of the destruction remain, in the romantic style of the 19th century. Even today, these fake medieval ruins, in the open air, are the most visible evidence of the great catastrophe that devastated Lisbon in the mid-18th century. It was in the Carmo barracks that the dictator Marcelo Caetano took refuge from the mutinous military during the Carnation Revolution in 1974.
