Event Description
This proposed walk starts next to the Colares Regional Winery. The route takes place in an area of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and runs along a hillside, with unobstructed views of the Atlantic coastline. It includes passes through Almoçageme, Ulgueira and the village of Penedo. The route uses part of the Corvo path, and climbs up to the Cabeço do Outeiro watchtower, along little-used paths before descending again and passing through the pretty village of Penedo, before reaching the banks of the Ribeira de Colares before its end. A walk not to be missed by all nature lovers.
Ulgueira
Ulgueira has managed to survive, although not entirely, some of the unbridled urbanisation that has grown in the region due to the enlargement of the Lisbon metropolitan area, the development of Sintra and the growing tourist demand for this coastal area. It's worth a visit to its white, quiet streets, from where you can enjoy a beautiful panorama, and to see the 16th century Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, which has a unique Mannerist portal dating from 1566, or the interesting Chafariz dos Festeiros, dating from 1766.
Penedo Village
The village of Penedo, in the heart of the Serra de Sintra, features old houses, a traditional bandstand, a fountain in the centre of the village and the surrounding nature that perfectly frames the village. The Penedo crowns one of Sintra's hillsides, so as you explore the village's paths and alleys, you can catch a glimpse of the Atlantic Ocean and Praia das Maçãs. With many centuries of history, there are traditions such as the Divine Holy Spirit Festivities, which take place in the chapel at the top of the village and date back to the reign of King Dinis and Queen St Isabel.
