This is another walk as part of the events dedicated to the Water Cycle in the city of Lisbon. This time, we'll walk along an itinerary that takes us to see some of the places linked to the capital's water supply, from the historic spouts of the medieval and modern periods, to the fountains and fountains built after the completion of the Águas Livres Aqueduct.

A journey through Lisbon's history, passing through 2 Gardens, 1 Tapada and various Fountains, from the simplest to the most sumptuous. As well as providing an enriching cultural experience, this walk will be an excellent opportunity to explore Lisbon, enjoying unique landscapes and learning more about some of its less publicised corners.

The route is a circular one, about 11 kilometres long and starts next to Mãe de Água das Amoreiras.Rato Fountain

Built between 1753 and 1754 to a design by Carlos Mardel, its Baroque eighteenth-century architectural structure follows the general scheme of other Mardelian fountains. Made of lioz stone, it is a fountain with a back (the noble area of the complex), set against a wall, decorated symmetrically with fins, delimited on the sides by two rusticated pilasters with lachrymatories, topped by a small triangular pediment crowned by urns and surmounted by a round arch, forming a niche, with an iron railing and integrated into the balustrade of the Palace of the Dukes of Palmela. The water flows on two levels, one higher up, where a polygonal tank receives water from two spouts intended for private individuals and waterers, and a tank of smaller proportions, on the ground floor, used for drinking animals. This fountain was fed by a special pipe that came directly from the Mãe de Água das Amoreiras. Implanted harmoniously at the confluence of Rua do Salitre and the current Rua da Escola Politécnica, its monumental and scenographic appearance has faded to the present day and its importance as urban furniture has gone unnoticed, lost in a corner of Largo do Rato.
