Event Description
EVENT: Weekend at the Lousal Mining Complex, Beja, and Descent to the Aljustrel Mine
DATE OF REALISATION: 11 to 12 April 2026
ENROLMENT DEADLINE : 30th April 2026
EVENT DESCRIPTION: “Weekend at the Lousal Mining Complex, Beja, and Descent to the Aljustrel Mine”
In this proposed activity we will go on two walks, one to discover the surroundings of the Lousal Mining Complex and the other in the mining town of Aljustrel. In between, there will be time for a stroll through the historic centre of Beja. On Sunday, after breakfast and a walk through the town of Aljustrel, we'll go on a guided tour of the Mining Park, including a descent into the Mining Gallery on Floor 30. It's a weekend full of interesting things to do, where we can also try some of Alentejo's fine cuisine. Come with us and you won't regret it! Places are limited!
Lousal Village and Mining Complex
The Lousal Mine and its mining village are part of an old mining area located in the parishes of Azinheira dos Barros and São Mamede do Sádão. It was exploited in two phases, first in the 19th century and then from 1900 to 1988, and was part of the Belgian group “SAPEC” for most of its production. The main product was pyrite, from which sulphur was extracted, used in the production of sulphuric acid, which in turn was a component in the manufacture of fertilisers. The closure of the mines caused serious economic problems in the village of Lousal, where the workers and their families lived, which is why the Grândola municipality and SAPEC began a programme to rehabilitate the old mining structures.
Mining Museum
This museum, located in the old power station building, aims to recreate the atmosphere of the Lousal mines and is an integral part of the Frédéric Velge Foundation. Copper pyrites were extracted from these mines between 1900 and 1988. Today it is possible to visit the facilities, excavations and galleries of the mine, as well as the engines of the power station that supplied not only the mine, but also the local population.
Aljustrel Mining Park
The Aljustrel Mining Park is a living space where stories are told using innovation. A museum space without conventional walls, where you can learn, feel and reflect. One of the highlights of the project is the immersive tunnel, designed to evoke the daily life of miners. The lanterns project shadows and lights that accompany the chants of labour and the invocation to Santa Barbara, patron saint of miners. In this atmosphere, the hymn echoes as a tribute to the courage and resilience of those who, for generations, have lived from the depths of the earth. One of the most memorable experiences of the entire guided tour is the descent into one of the Mine's tunnels.
These are some of the most important places we'll be visiting during this event:
- Lousal Mining Village and Mining Complex
- Lousal Ciência Viva Centre
- Mining Museum
- Stroll through the historic centre of Beja
- Tour of the town of Ajustrel

Points of interest: Walkways, Lagoons, Corona Stream, Malacate, Workshops and Warehouses, Power Station, Old Railway and Natural Landscapes
The “Lousal a Céu Aberto” (Lousal in the Open) route consists of a walking tour of the old Lousal mine shaft, which once produced pyrite, a sulphide rich in sulphur, essential for the production of sulphuric acid and used in the manufacture of fertilisers. At the beginning and end of the circuit, various infrastructures that characterise industrial mining archaeology are shown. Along the way, visitors come into contact with different geological structures (outcrops, faults and folds) as well as acid water lagoons (“green lagoon” and “red lagoon”, the latter of which has a submerged spring). The cementation tanks (former copper extraction structures) are worth noting, and at the end of the circuit we walk along the “pyrites road”, which used to distribute the ore to the railway line. Other infrastructures such as the administrative, social and housing buildings are also covered.

Event Description
EVENT: Weekend in Terras de Sicó - Buracas de Casmilo, Canhão de Vale de Poios, Santiago da Guarda and Redinha
DATE OF REALISATION: 16-17 May 2026
ENROLMENT DEADLINE : 10th May 2026
EVENT DESCRIPTION: “Weekend in the Lands of Sicó - Buracas de Casmilo, Canhão de Vale de Poios, Santiago da Guarda and Redinha”
In this activity proposal we will go on two hikes in an area where tranquillity and memories of other times reign. We start with a hike from the village of Furadouro and the most emblematic point is the Buracas de Casmilo, in the Serra de Sicó massif, where there is the highest concentration of potholes in Portugal. This is an unmissable experience for those who enjoy walks that combine stunning landscapes, impressive geology and a touch of mystery. After the walk we'll visit the Monumental Complex of Santiago da Guarda, where there are traces of the Romans who passed through here. On Sunday, the walk will take in the Vale de Poios canyon, one of the most impressive fluviocratic canyons in Portugal. This trail also passes by the Senhora da Estrela Viewpoint and Chapel and the Dolina dos Poios, among other places of interest. Come with us and you won't regret it! Limited places
These are some of the most important places we'll be visiting during this event:

Walking: “Casmilo Hole Route”
Points of interest: Buracas de Casmilo, Aldeia de Furadouro, Aldeia de Casmilo, Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Círculo and Natural landscapes
Located in the municipality of Condeixa-a-Nova, the Buracas do Casmilo Trail is an unmissable experience for those who enjoy walks that combine stunning landscapes, impressive geology and a touch of mystery. The highlight of this trail is undoubtedly the Buracas do Casmilo, a series of cavities carved out of the imposing limestone cliffs. These formations are the remains of ancient caves which, over the millennia, were moulded by erosion and partially collapsed, leaving large “holes” in the cliffs visible. The result is an almost surreal scene, where the force of nature has carved out real windows into the region's geological past. Although they are not real caves, these holes served in ancient times as shelter for animals and possibly for the region's first inhabitants. Today, they are one of the most emblematic places in the Serra de Sicó, attracting not only hikers but also photographers and nature lovers looking to record their grandeur
Route length: 11 kilometres
Estimated duration: 3h30
Level of difficulty of the route: 3 (Scale of 1 to 5)
13h30 - We suggest the picnic option, which is the responsibility of each participant.
15h00 - Visit to the Monumental Complex of Santiago da Guarda
A National Monument since 1978 and the only example of Manueline architecture in the county. It brings together in the same space a four-century tower with a medieval base, rebuilt on the ruins of a Roman Villa from the 4th and 5th centuries, and a Manueline palace, built by Simão de Sousa Ribeiro during the first half of the 16th century.
16.30 - Short walk in Pombal
18h15 - Hotel check-in
19h45 - Suggested Group Dinner
17th May (Sunday)
Walking: “Vale de Poios fluvial canyon”
Points of interest: Vale de Poios river canyon, Senhora da Estrela viewpoint and chapel, Poios doline, natural landscapes, etc.
The route starts in the village of Poios and follows rural paths with stone walls, olive groves and agricultural fields, offering a gradual entry into the wild environment of the canyon. As the trail progresses, the road narrows and turns into a stony track that leads deep into the valley, a dramatic scene marked by rocks, steep slopes and dense vegetation. The route continues towards the villages of Mocifas de São Amaro and Covão das Favas, combining rural paths, pine forests and stretches of tarmac. The ascent to the geodesic vertex of Senhora da Estrela (398 metres) offers a privileged view of the surrounding landscape and is one of the highlights of this trail in the Serra de Sicó. The final descent passes the dolina, which holds water all year round, before returning to the village of Poios.
Route length: 9 kilometres
Estimated time: 3 hours
Level of difficulty of the route: 3 (Scale of 1 to 5)
13h00 - Restaurant lunch suggestion
14.30 - Short visit to the village of Redinha
Inhabited since Romanisation, it had its first charter in 1159 by the Order of the Temple. In the 14th century it passed to the Order of Christ, beginning a period of prosperity that ended with the French invasions. Today it is one of the most important parishes in the county's tourism scene
Points of interest: Romanesque bridge, pillory and parish church
15.30 - Short visit to the Anços water holes
Olhos de Água do Anços is a naturally beautiful karst spring located between Arrancada and Anços, in the parish of Redinha, in Pombal. This spot is popular for bathing, with its crystal-clear waters, and is a place of great environmental value.

Event Description
EVENT: Weekend at Queimadela Dam, Guimarães, and Levadas de Jugueiros
DATE OF REALISATION: 23rd to 24th May 2026
ENROLMENT DEADLINE : 20th April 2026
EVENT DESCRIPTION: “Weekend at Queimadela Dam, Guimarães and Jugueiros”
In this activity proposal we will go on two walks, one to get to know the surroundings of the Queimadela Dam, enjoying the walkways, picnic area and banks of the Vizela River, in a green landscape and enjoying nature, the other walk will be the Levada de Jugueiros, in the municipality of Felgueiras, almost always using Levadas, and along the banks of the Bugio River, enjoying its beautiful waterfalls, up to the Barrias Natural Waterfall, in a setting of great beauty. There will also be time to enjoy the best of the city of Guimarães, in the late afternoon and early evening, and to pass by the Tanques de Couros, a heritage site to be rediscovered in the city of Guimarães, a memory of an industrial past. Come with us and you won't regret it! Places are limited!
Queimadela Dam
The Queimadela Dam is a true natural refuge, where leisure, sport and nature harmonise in a setting of rare beauty. Its surroundings include a large bathing and leisure area, equipped with a picnic area, grills, shaded rest areas, support bar, toilets, showers, first aid post, car park and pier. The 3,000 m² river beach is supervised during the bathing season, guaranteeing safety and tranquillity for all visitors. The surrounding natural heritage harbours a remarkable biodiversity, offering a unique experience of contact with nature.
Pontido Village
The Queimadela Dam Walkways are located a short distance from the picturesque Aldeia do Pontido. This village preserves traditional architecture and offers an authentic insight into Portuguese rural life.
Guimarães - Leather Tanks
These tanks, located in the Leather Zone, are an important testimony to a tanning industry that was one of the most important in the productive fabric of Guimarães. The tradition of this industry dates back to the Middle Ages and developed with more or less success until the middle of the 20th century, when it entered an irreversible process of decline. Despite some dispersion throughout the municipality, the fur processing industry had a privileged centre of development in the 19th century in this area. The recognition of the ancestry and specificity of this activity in the area is expressed in the fact that it was the first area to be classified as a Property of Public Interest in July 1977, in what was the first legislative initiative of its kind in Portugal in relation to industrial archaeology. These tanks remain today as a symbol of this local industry.
The Levadas of Jugueiros
This is one of those routes that you do slowly, with time to stop, take a deep breath and let yourself be enveloped by the landscape. This path follows the traditional levadas - water channels that have irrigated the fields of the parish of Jugueiros for generations. Along the trail, we walk side by side with the water, which flows peacefully between stone walls, dense vegetation and agricultural areas. One of the great advantages of this trail is its low exposure to the sun: almost the entire route takes place in the shade, which makes it perfect even on the hottest days. But what really enchants are the countless cascades and waterfalls you'll find along the way - some more hidden, others inviting you to take a longer break. Along the way there are several rest areas and at least three picnic sites, ideal for a picnic or just to recharge your batteries.
These will be some of the most important places we'll pass through during this event:
- Queimadela Dam
- River Vizela
- Walkways
- Pontido Village
- River Beach and Picnic Park
- Tour of the Historic Centre of Guimarães
- Guimarães Castle
- Palace of the Dukes of Bragança
- Tanques de Couros, Largo do Toural, Jardim da Alameda, Padrão de Nossa Senhora da Vitória, etc.

Torrão
The name Torrão comes from the word torrejam, which means "big tower". Situated on the right bank of the Xarrama river (a tributary of the Sado), between Alto Alentejo and Baixo Alentejo, it has a long historical past as a settlement with roots in the Neolithic period. It was an area of some importance during the Roman period and was also under Arab influence. It was liberated from this domination in 1217 (when Alcácer do Sal was also liberated) and Torrão was then donated to the Order of Santiago.
Torrão's main economic activities are livestock farming, agriculture, construction, cork production, wine, olive oil and bread. Handicrafts include wooden miniatures, hand-painted ceramics, blacksmiths, chair stuffing, lace and embroidery.
Vale do Gaio Dam
With a catchment area covering 509 square kilometres, the Engenheiro Trigo de Morais dam, better known as the Vale do Gaio dam, began operating in 1949. Surrounded by beautiful green areas, the Vale do Gaio dam is an ideal place for sports and nautical activities (fishing and canoeing), for a simple stroll in the open air or to enjoy a few days of relaxation in the hotel located there.
Some of the points of interest on the walk
- Xarrama River - Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption - Chapel of Our Lady of Good Success - Roman Road and Bridge - Misericórdia Church - Natural Landscapes -

Marrakech
Between tradition and modernity, Marrakech promises incomparable sensations. Strolling through Jemaa El-Fna square and the souks with their shimmering colours and oriental scents, the red city answers your desire for a change of scenery at the snap of a finger. Horse-drawn carriage rides, sunny terraces, travelling artists and other daytime and evening activities will punctuate your stay in Morocco. You can admire all the architectural richness of the Medina by visiting one of its many riads, small oriental palaces organised around a central courtyard, or you can recharge your batteries in the Menara, a vast garden with a basin that is emblematic of the city. Marrakech leaves the choice up to its visitors, taking advantage of its incredible diversity.
Unforgettable experience in the desert
We will stay for two nights in the desert area, one of them in a luxury tent, which will allow us to enjoy something truly magical, to feel the immensity of the vast desert dune system.
Todra Gorges
It's one of Morocco's most impressive natural sites: the Todra Gorges (Le Gorges du Todra or Todra Gorges) are a gorge, through which a stream passes, flanked by limestone cliffs or ledges that leave you open-mouthed at the almost 300 metres high! Located in the eastern part of the High Atlas Mountains, these rock formations were sculpted by the Todra River. The highest rocks in this gorge are about 15 kilometres from Tinghir, a town in the centre of an authentic oasis.
The Dunes of Erg Chebbi
In Mergouza, in the far south-west of Morocco, you'll find one of the most impressive sights of this trip: the Erg Chebbi Dunes, with peaks that reach 150 metres high and a length of around 22 kilometres, this sea of golden sand is absolutely magnificent!

In this activity proposal we'll hike and visit some of the most fabulous places in the Picos de Europa National Park in Asturias. In this programme we will pass through the most beautiful landscapes in northern Spain, without forgetting a day dedicated to places of great beauty, such as 3 coastal villages. We'll hike/walk around the famous Covadonga Lakes and follow one of the most beautiful trails in Spain: “La Ruta del Cares”, an imposing path in the Cares River Gorge, between Poncebos and Caín. We'll also visit Potes, in Cantabria, and we'll go to the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, where history tells us there is a small part of the left side of the Cross where Jesus Christ was crucified. Come with us and you won't regret it!
These will be some of the most important places on our itinerary:
- Tour of the Picos de Europa National Park
- Covadonga Lakes Walk - 12 kms (optional - those who wish can do only 3, 5 or 9 kms)
- Tour of Covadonga, with a visit to the Basilica and Hermitage of “Santa Cueva”.”

- Tour of Potes and Visit to the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Lieblana
- Natural landscapes
TIME: Departure from Lisbon at 6.30am
RETURN: Arrival in Lisbon at 8.30pm
Picos de Europa National Park
In 2003, UNESCO recognised the natural value of the Picos de Europa, 85 years after the region was designated Spain's first National Park. The Picos de Europa is one of the most astonishing national parks on the European continent, made up of three large massifs and divided between Asturias, Cantabria and León. It is a place of worship not only for its mountains and gorges, but also for the sanctuaries of Santo Toribio de Liébana and Covadonga.
Cangas de Onis
Cangas de Onís was the capital of Asturias and is now a town of 4,500 inhabitants full of hotels and shops selling gastronomic products and mountain equipment. The offer is varied and ranges from cheeses and cold meats to the cider that is so typical of this region. Highlights in Cangas include the ogival Roman bridge, with the Victoria Cross (symbol of Asturias) hanging over the waters of the River Sella, as well as the Chapel of Santa Cruz and the Church of Santa Maria, with its magnificent stained glass windows.
Covadonga Lakes
The lakes of Enol and La Ercina are an unforgettable part of the trip and the views around them and from the Miradouros de los Lagos are something that will remain in the memory of all nature lovers. From here there are hiking routes to suit all tastes, such as the one that leads to the Miradouros del Rey (King's Viewpoint), passing through various pastures and traditional shepherds' shelters!
Covadonga
When you arrive in Covadonga, the first formation you see is the rock of the Auseva emerging from among the deciduous forests, with the Santa Cova overhanging the rock and a waterfall flowing from below. It seems like a dream, yet everything is real, even if it is flavoured with the fantastic spirit of the 1877 reconstruction. The architecture here becomes the perfect complement to the cult of Santina y Pelayo, a historical figure who rests on the spot where, on 28 May 722, he won the battle that would forge his epic history. We'll visit the Covadonga Sanctuary and Basilica of Our Lady of Covadonga, A neo-Romanesque building that leaves no-one indifferent.
Ribadesella, Llastres and Llanes
Asturias, in the north of Spain, has a number of very interesting coastal towns that are worth a visit to the region on their own. Nestled between the sea and the mountains, Llastres, in the municipality of Colunga, is considered one of the most beautiful towns in Spain, a distinction it officially holds and which is fully deserved. This fishing village, once dedicated to whaling and a stronghold against possible invasions of the coast, has been honoured as an Exemplary Town of Asturias. Llastres has a spectacular historic centre, with cobbled streets, palaces and emblazoned houses that blend in with the simple fishermen's houses, all of which have one common denominator: the sea breeze that constantly caresses them and the splendid panoramic views of the Bay of Biscay and Mount Sueve. There are many charming places: the Balleneros neighbourhood, the Buen Suceso chapel, the Clock Tower and the Church of Santa María de Sábada.
The town of Ribadesella, founded by King Alfonso X “the Wise” in the 13th century, offers visitors an interesting mix of medieval town planning and modernist architecture, as well as a stunning beach area. Ribadesella's urban structure is conditioned by a bridge that divides the fishing harbour in two. On this bridge, on the first Saturday in August, there is the finish line of Asturias' most representative festival: the Sella River Canoe Race. Its historic centre has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.
Llanes is one of the most visited towns in Asturias due to its fine white sandy beaches, tree-lined promenades, precious monuments and the famous Cubos de la Memoria, the work that artist Agustín Ibarrolla created by painting cement blocks.
Potes and Monastery of Santo Toribio
The town of Potes is located in the geographical centre of the Liébana valley and is one of the most visited towns in Cantabria. It is the ideal destination for lovers of nature, the mountains, outdoor sports, good food and also for history and culture lovers. The square is the heart of the city and one of the busiest places. In the background stands the Torre do Infantado, the town's symbol. At the bottom of the valley runs the River Deva, and a stroll along its banks along the bridges is something we're going to do. Potes has many other charms among its streets and squares. The old quarter is divided between the two banks of the river Quiviesa, and is one of the areas where the traditional architecture of the region is well reflected.
One of the most venerated treasures of the Monasterio Santo Toribio de Liébana is the Lignum Crucis, a piece of the True Cross. This relic, believed to be the largest surviving fragment of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, is displayed for pilgrims and visitors. Its presence adds a sense of awe and reverence to the monastery, in addition to its natural surroundings and the views from the San Miguel viewpoint.
Cabrales Arenas
This is another gateway to the Picos de Europa National Park and is famous for its cheese and the Cheese Museum. It is the starting point for various walking routes.

Walking along the banks and weirs of the Ribeira de Oleiros
This circular route takes in a small part of the town of Oleiros and runs along the course of the Ribeira de Oleiros, where you'll find a variety of beautiful scenery provided by the water and the beautiful landscapes along its banks. In the town, the Igreja da Misericórdia (Church of Mercy), built in the 16th century, deserves a mention. The interior of the Mother Church is a treasure formed by the harmony of the extraordinary gilded altarpieces, the panel of Hispano-Arabic tiles and the rich ceiling made up of polychrome wooden coffered ceilings. The route then continues along the banks of the Ribeira de Oleiros. Next, the route leads to the simple village of Tojeira, along a riverside path that crosses the Açude da Salina and follows the levada of the same name, once trodden by the local population. From the aforementioned village to the Tapadona picnic area, the route continues along rural paths that follow the stream. Here, the presence of small herds of goats is commonplace.

Event Description
Do you know what Lisbon looked like when the Romans arrived here in 137 BC? How was the Roman city of Olisipo organised on the ground? What were its most emblematic buildings? Come with us on this walk and find out not only the answer to these questions, but also other curious aspects of the Roman presence in Lisbon.
The walk follows paths of great historical and heritage interest, starting in the garden of Praça D. Luís I, heading towards Cais do Sodré and from there, by the Tagus, to Praça do Comércio. The route will then continue along the riverside area of the Roman city of Olisipo, then up through the heart of Alfama to Portas do Sol. This is followed by a circuit around the Castle hill, stopping off at some of the most significant sites of the Roman presence in Lisbon. After reaching the Lisbon Cathedral area, rich in various testimonies from Roman times, the walk will continue to the Praça da Figueira and Praça do Rossio areas, where the Necropolis and the Roman Circus will be discussed. On the way back to the starting point of the walk, we'll pass by the Archaeological Centre of Rua dos Correeiros and the Cryptoporticus of Rua da Conceição. A little surprise is in store for the end.
Throughout the walk, which does not include visits to the museum sites, there will be brief presentations of the most significant sites, also contextualising their importance within the functioning and urban organisation of the Roman city. Another event not to be missed!
Some of the points of interest on the tour
- Praça do Comércio - Casa dos Bicos - Aurea Museum - Late Roman Wall - Portas do Sol - Roman Theatre - Lisbon Cathedral - Black Stones tombstones - Cassios Thermal Baths - Necropolis of Praça da Figueira - Roman Circus - Cryptoporticus of Rua da Conceição - Archaeological Centre of Rua dos Correeiros -

Walking: “Historical Way of Santiago do Cacém”
Points of interest: Santiago do Cacém, Historic Centre, Figueira River Urban Centre, Tapada dos Condes de Avillez Garden, Castle and Natural Landscapes
This route takes us to the historic centre of the city with the greatest historical and cultural interest on the Alentejo coast, also passing by the Roman ruins of Miróbriga. The castle, from the Islamic period, and the Mother Church, from the 13th century, are both national monuments. The narrow streets show examples of popular architecture, but also imposing stately homes from the time of the great lords of the land, when agriculture and livestock farming were based on cereals, fruit and cork, horse, mule, ass, cattle, sheep, goats and pigs. In the 19th century, the town enjoyed great prosperity: there were cork factories, sawmills and carpentry shops, mills, forges, workshops, blacksmiths and locksmiths, in a dynamic that attracted lawyers, pharmacists, grocers and farm traders and encouraged the opening of cafés, collectives and cultural and recreational associations, such as the Harmony Society, the oldest collective in the country.
Route length: 10 kilometres
Estimated duration: 3h30
Level of difficulty of the route: 3 (Scale of 1 to 5)
1pm - We suggest the picnic option, which is the responsibility of each participant.
15h00 - Visit to the Roman Ruins of Miróbriga
The ruins of the Roman city of Miróbriga, abandoned in the 5th century AD, include residential buildings, a hippodrome, thermal baths, a forum, temples and a bridge. There aren't many well-preserved Roman cities in Portugal, which makes Miróbriga a very special archaeological site, where you can see the sophisticated workings of the baths, with public bathing rooms at different temperatures. Also well preserved are the forum and the commercial area, with various shops, taverns, etc.
16.30 - Short walk in Sines
18h15 - Check-in at the 4-star hotel in Sines
19h45 - Suggested Group Dinner
5th July (Sunday)
“Visit to Pessegueiro Island and walk in Porto Covo”
10h - Boat trip to Pessegueiro Island
Pessegueiro Island is around 340 metres long and 325 metres wide and is just 250 metres from the current coastline. It is a piece of fossilised dune made up of sandstone. As the name suggests, this rock results from the aggregation of sand grains by a natural cement, often calcium carbonate, which comes from shell fragments in the sand. The island of Pessegueiro is therefore an emerged piece of a huge fossil dune, largely submerged today. In fact, the sandstone resulted from the consolidation of ancient dunes, formed when the sea was a few kilometres back from the current coastline (marine regression). Today, Pessegueiro Island functions as a gigantic breakwater, providing an excellent natural shelter for anchoring boats. In fact, two harbour establishments are documented on the island, one of the Iron Age and another from Roman times. The use of the island during the Roman occupation is better documented, since the works carried out at that time almost completely destroyed the Iron Age structures. In any case, occupation was seasonal and the island remained heavily dependent on the mainland.
12h00 - Porto Covo coastal walk
Points of interest: Praia da Baía de Porto Covo, Praia dos Buizinhos, Miradouro de Porto Covo, Praia Pequena, Praia do Banho, Praia da Gaivota, Praia do Espingardeiro and Praia Grande, etc.
The route runs along the north coast of Porto Covo, passing several beaches and viewpoints with fantastic views of the coastline.
Route length: 3 kilometres
Estimated time: 1 hour
Level of difficulty of the route: 2 (Scale of 1 to 5)
13h00 - Restaurant lunch suggestion
Points of interest: Visit to Pessegueiro Island and stroll along the Porto Covo coastline

This beach consists of two water weirs in the area surrounding the island, with a pedestrian crossing point, a children's pool fed by river water, grass areas, picnic equipment, changing rooms and pedestrian areas.
Pomares River Beach
With a privileged view of the Serra do Açor, the Pomares river beach is located next to the bridge that crosses the Ribeira da Moura, which dates back to the 18th century, in the village of Pomares. The dam in the bed of the stream makes it possible to increase the flow, forming an extensive blanket of water that allows for bathing activities.

Surrounded by great landscape interestThe village of Piódão differs from all the other mountain villages in terms of the general appearance of the surrounding area and, above all, the layout and arrangement of the streets, the picturesque houses and the pleasant way its people treat visitors. Walking along the steep schist pavements of Piódão, you can see crosses on doorpostsThese invoke the protection of St Barbara against bad weather. Whitewashed with blue stripes, the Mother Churchor Our Lady of the Conception, stands out against the backdrop.
Foz D' Égua
In the Serra do Açor, near the village of Piódão and after travelling 8 km by road, we come to Foz D'Égua, where the Piódão and Chãs D'Égua streams meet and their course is blocked by a dam, creating a mirror of water and making for a paradisiacal spot in the middle of summer. Still downstream, the Torno stream meets. The site has a natural beauty, and the setting of the two existing bridges, the proximity of two schist mills, a wine press and the blocks of stone carved by the current of the streams, allow it to be used by many tourists.

There's also time for a visit to the town of Penela, where we'll visit its castle, a national monument, and a walk in Figueiró dos Vinhos, where we'll visit Malhoa's "Cocoon". Pedra Ferida Waterfall and Louçainha Beach
The trail runs through the Serra do Espinhal in a valley where the Azenha stream flows, where we'll find the admirable Pedra Ferida waterfall, almost 25 metres high, which forms a delightful natural pool. And if the waterfall is enchanting, the trail that leads to it is enthralling. Along the Ribeira da Azenha, we are treated to lush vegetation, the omnipresent sound of running water, small pools of water, wooden bridges and old watermills. There's even a picnic area where you can enjoy a picnic surrounded by nature. A real enchanted forest to savour slowly.
Praia Fluvial da Louçainha is a small paradise in the municipality of Penela. This refuge is in the middle of the dense Serra do Espinhal. It takes advantage of the naturalness of the Azenha stream due to the construction of several dams with different depths. This place is very popular in the region due to the surrounding landscape, which conveys tranquillity due to the perfect union of the green of the mountains with the crystalline freshness of the waters
1pm - Picnic lunch suggestion (up to each participant)
15h30- Tour of Penela (Castle, Mother Church, Pillory, etc.)
The military occupation of the hill where Penela is located is very old, dating back at least to the Romans, who guarded the Mérida-Conímbriga-Braga road from here. Invaded by the Arabs in 716, it was retaken in the 11th century by Count Sesnando, the first governor of Coimbra. The count had a strong castle built on the site of the alcazaba, which he repopulated, thus creating a Christian town under the protection of the crenellated walls. Graves carved into the rock with anthropomorphic designs remain from this settlement. Its construction dates back to the 11th century, although what can be seen of the castle today only dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Inside is the Church of St Michael, whose earliest origins date back to the 12th century. Penela Castle is a National Monument.

Distance: 10 kilometres
Difficulty: 3.5 (Scale from 1 to 5, 1 being the easiest)
Estimated duration: 3h30m
Casal de São Simão Schist Trail
This walk takes place on the walkways of the Fragas de São Simão, visits the schist village of Casal de São Simão and runs along the idyllic banks of the Ribeira de Alge and Fato, where the old watermills still shine, and through the quiet villages of Além da Ribeira, Ponte do Brás Curado and Saondam as well as the river beach of the Fragas de São Simão.
Fragas do Casal de São Simão walkways
The Fragas de São Simão walkway is approximately 2 kilometres long and connects the Schist Village of Casal de São Simão to the lofty Fragas de São Simão viewpoint, passing by the stunning Fragas de São Simão River Beach.
Part of the "Peniche Peninsula" geosite, which is a limestone platform that has been eroded by wind, rain and the sea, you can see the beautiful shapes that erosion has created, forming a lapiás.
Casal de São Simão River Beach
The beach is a 15-minute walk (along the footpath) from the village of Casal de São Simão. The water of the Ribeira de Alge, which passes by on its way to the Zêzere, is so clear that you can see the small stones inside.
The abundance of laurel trees and cork oaks gives the air a comforting fragrance and the green of the surrounding hills, which lead to the Lousã mountain range, envelop us in beautiful scenery. The river beach is located between two imposing crags, where climbing is practised with various equipped routes, abseiling and slides. The "smaller" rocks are used as a solarium or diving board. Walking south, next to the beach, you'll find several levadas and cloaks of the region's original flora.
Schist Village of Casal de São Simão
A small village with practically a single street, essentially built from quartzite. It is located on one of the flanks of the quartzite ridge that gives rise to the Fragas de São Simão and has the oldest church in the municipality of Figueiró dos Vinhos. The village stretches along a ridge almost parallel to the course of the Ribeira de Alge. The entrance is at the highest point and the village ends where the slopes have made it difficult to continue the road.
