Event Description

Discover inner peace and connect with nature on a guided walk with meditation in the area surrounding the Capuchos Convent in Sintra. Leave behind the stresses and strains of daily life and embark on a journey of self-discovery and serenity. During this guided walk with an experienced meditation instructor (introduction to the Vipassana tradition), you will enjoy moments of silence and introspection as you walk through this magical forest.

Let your senses guide you in this unique environment and feel the energy of nature in a transformative experience suitable for all ages. At the points of interest there is a brief explanation of the place (history and legends). At the end, you'll find a sense of inner peace and well-being that will stay with you for a long time. Another event not to be missed!

Alto da Memória:

Memorial to the 25 firefighters who died there in 1966. With extremely dry and hot summers, Portugal lives with a plague of forest fires every year. The Sintra mountains are a regular setting for some of these fires. On 7 September 1966, a platoon found itself in a terrible tactical situation and was surrounded by flames. In the space of a few minutes, 25 of these brave men died.

Monk's Peak:

Tholos do Monge is a megalithic (prehistoric) monument. Originally, 4,500 years ago, it was a collective tomb and was later reused in the Bronze Age (1800 BC to 800 BC). Today, it is a white obelisk that stands on almost flat rocks (geodesic landmark). It is located at the top of the Capuchos road on the ridge of the mountain. It is called Alto do Monge or Tholos do Monge and has an altitude of 491 metres. It is the third highest point in the entire mountain range.

Capuchos Convent:

The Capuchos Convent was founded in the 16th century and is known for its simplicity and natural integration with the surrounding landscape. This Franciscan convent stands out for its simplicity, completely devoid of luxury and comfort. The building materialises the philosophy and ideals of the Order of St Francis of Assisi: the search for spiritual perfection through detachment from the world and renunciation of the pleasures associated with earthly life. The convent is situated on a hillside, surrounded by lush vegetation and offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. The convent also has a small chapel, several lodges and a vegetable garden. It is a unique and serene destination for those interested in history, architecture and nature.
