This walk starts next to the Dom Quixote Mill, on the road that connects to Cabo da Roca and enters the Serra de Sintra, up to the Anta de Adrenunes, with a fabulous view of the Atlantic coastline, travelling along rural paths and trails of great beauty up to Peninha and down to the Rio Touro path and back to the starting point.

Anta de Andrenunes

A Anta de Adrenuneslocated in Cabo da Roca, Portugal, is a dolmen, i.e. a megalithic monument. It is a structure made up of several stones, between which there is a passage about 5 metres high. This passage may have served as a collective necropolis during megalithic times. It is located on top of a hill that dominates the landscape around Cabo da Roca and the vast region that extends northwards from the Serra de Sintra.

Peninha Sanctuary:

Here we can see rocks that make up the Sintra Magmatic Massif. This massif was formed around 80 Ma ago at great depths, and the dominant rock is granite.

In the Serra de Sintra it is possible to see landscapes in which chaotic heaps of huge rounded blocks of rock stand out, constituting what is known as "block chaos". These rocks are essentially granite and syenitic in composition, and the Peninha buildings were built on top of one of these syenitic rock piles. The Peninha Sanctuary is part of an architectural complex formed by the old chapel of St Saturninus (founded by D. Pêro Pais at the time of the kingdom's formation of Portugal and now abandoned) and the romantic revival-style palace, which resembles a fortification, built in 1918.

The present chapel dates back to the 17th century and was founded by Friar Pedro da Conceição. The panelling that covers the interior of the chapel depicts scenes from the Life of the Virgin and was made by different authors. The monumental panels in the body of the nave have been attributed to Manuel dos Santos.

Also by him are the two panels flanking the main door and the semi-circular tympanum, the latter depicting Pentecost. The chancel, dating from 1690, is covered in marble in different colours, which extends to the coffered vault. The altarpiece, also made of fine marble inlays, is attributed to João Antunes, as it is very similar to so many others designed by Pedro II's architect.

Legend of Peninha

It is said that during the reign of King João III, in the land of Almoínhos-Velhos, there was a mute shepherdess who used to take her sheep to graze on top of the mountain. One day, one of her sheep ran away, leaving the young shepherdess desperate to find it. After a long search, she spotted a lady in the distance carrying her sheep. The shepherdess thanked her in any way she could, as the sheep was unable to speak. The lady, taking advantage of the opportunity, asked the shepherdess to give her some bread. The shepherdess explained gesturally that it had been a bad year and there was a lot of hunger. The lady then gave her some advice:

• When you get home, call for your mum and find some bread.

The shepherdess tried to explain to her that this was impossible, because not only was there sure to be no bread in her house, but she couldn't call her mum because she was mute. But the lady insisted so much that the shepherdess decided to do as she was told.

When he got home, he called for his mother and her voice was heard throughout the house. She told her mother the story and hurried off to find the bread. And what was their surprise when they found bread in a chest that was enough for the whole village.

The next day, as a token of their gratitude, the whole village went up into the hills and in the very place where the little shepherd had found the lady, there was now a cave with the image of Our Lady. This place became sacred and later a chapel was built there, known as the Chapel of Our Lady of Peninha. Classified by the IIP as a Property of Public Interest in 1977
