This Walk by Caminhando will take place on a circular route, starting in São Salvador, in the parish of Cercal, and continuing up the eastern slope of the Serra de Montejunto. After an uphill walk to the north, it turns inland, passing through part of the old Roman road used by the Franciscan monks. A little further on, we'll take a diversion to reach a geodesic landmark that will give us unobstructed views of the west and the coastline. After this point, we'll start our journey to Buracos Mineiros, and then begin the descent to our finishing point. Another event not to be missed!

Mining holes

The Serra de Montejunto is made up of a limestone massif of Jurassic formation, making it prone to the development of caves and grottoes.

Buracos Mineiros is one of the many caves where a variety of prehistoric remains have been found that show the characteristics of human settlement in the region. During the archaeological exploration of the cave, a staircase with a handrail was installed to allow easy access.

The cave has many interesting formations, but due to two sinkholes communicating with the surface it is in a fossilised state and no new formations have developed.

The cavity stretches for around 30 metres, with an approximate SE-NW orientation and develops on a near-horizontal plane. The interior corridor is large and the cave can be explored safely as it has no wells or steep slopes.

There are 3 entrances, the original one is on the hillside and can be entered by cat, the other communication points are at the top and correspond to two manholes, the manhole closest to the original entrance is equipped with a metal staircase with a double handrail.
