Event Description
At this event we will walk in an area where there is no shortage of places of interest, be it the Roman Bridge of Cheleiros, the Anços Waterfalls or the well-preserved village of Mata Pequena. Another event not to be missed!
Cheleiros Roman Bridge:
The bridge has a single round arch with a trestle deck and a walled guard. The intrados of the arch reveals the stonework, while all the other surfaces are fully plastered, with the exception of the pavement, which is made up of rolled pebbles.
Penedo do Lexim:
A former volcanic chimney of the Lisbon volcanic complex, Penedo do Lexim has a natural monumentality, almost like a cliff castle.
This elevation, located next to the Ribeira de Cheleiros (now the União das Freguesias de Igreja Nova e Cheleiros), was chosen as a living space for millennia and is one of the most significant archaeological sites in the municipality of Mafra.
This site has recorded occupation phases from various chronological periods, from the Neolithic period (4000 BC) to Roman times.
Around 5,000 years ago, a group of shepherds and farmers settled in Penedo do Lexim and left significant traces of their occupation: everyday artefacts (pottery, chipped and polished stone, worked bone, metal and food remains), living areas (huts) and defensive structures.
This "natural castle" surrounded by cliffs was fortified with walls and is an example of the first defensive architecture to appear in the 3rd millennium BC throughout the Iberian Peninsula.
