Event Description
This proposed walk starts next to the Fort of St George of Oitavos and runs along the Cascais coast almost to Guincho Beach, passing by Cabo Raso. The route also takes in the Cresmina Dunes (Interpretation Centre) and its walkways, ending at the starting point. Another event not to be missed!
Shallow Cape
The Cabo Raso Lighthouse is located in the São Brás de Sanxete Fort and is a red, cylindrical metal tower, thirteen metres high. It has a lantern, balcony and ancillary buildings.
Cresmina Dunes
The Cresmina Dune Interpretation Centre is a space created with the aim of showcasing the unique fauna and flora associated with the Guincho-Cresmina dune system. The Centre serves as a starting point for moments of discovery, as the space leads visitors to explore the dunes of Guincho and their specific characteristics via a walkway.
The Guincho-Cresmina dunes are a small part of the Guincho-Oitavos complex located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. This dune system is quite unique in that the sand from the Guincho and Cresmina beaches returns to the sea further south - between Oitavos and Guia, after migrating over the flat rocky platform of Cabo Raso. This is known as the Cresmina-Oitavos dune wind corridor.
Dune strands are fragile but very important geological structures, as they protect inland land from rising sea levels. As such, the Guincho-Cresmina dunes are an active and extremely unstable system due to the constant mobilisation of sandy particles by the strong northwest-southeast winds. The existence of impermeable barriers has narrowed the sand transport corridor, accelerating its dynamics. As wind speeds increased, sediment was deposited further away from the coastline with a consequent reduction in the beach area. Studies show that the Cresmina dune is advancing in a north-south direction, in some directions, by around 10 metres a year. These figures could have dramatic long-term effects in terms of the loss of arable land, infrastructure and housing.
