Event details

Event Description

This proposed walk starts in the garden of Praça dos Mártires da Liberdade, opposite the pier, and from there we'll walk arm in arm with the bay, taking the opportunity to get to know the oldest part of Seixal, the Mother Church, the old Mundet cork factory and Quinta da Fidalga (where we'll pay a brief visit). Then we'll pass the Naval Centre of Arrentela, as well as the Mother Church, with a superb view over the whole bay. From here we head north and pass some of the oldest Quintas in the region, such as Quinta do Pé Leve, Quinta do Álamo and Quinta da Trindade. Another highlight is the Moinho Novo dos Paulistas (old tide mill), which offers a fantastic view of the Moinhos de Alburrica, in the riverside area of Barreiro. Come and marvel at these wonders just outside Lisbon.

Seixal Bay

Seixal Bay is located in the estuary of the River Tagus, which extends into the land through a series of sea arms that give it its unique appearance. Classified as a National Ecological Reserve, the Bay and its riverside fronts are part of a wetland area of major importance at national and European level, due to its high biodiversity and exceptional landscape quality.

It is the municipality's main natural resource and has a high impact on biological, landscape and economic and social development aspects. Since ancient times, there has been a strong connection between the local community and the river. The measures to safeguard the ecosystems that make up this basin, as well as the creation of facilities that bring it closer to citizens, are a strong contribution by the municipality to the quality of life of the local population.

Quinta da Fidalga

Quinta da Fidalga, whose foundation dates back to the 15th century, is one of the oldest and best preserved examples of the agricultural and recreational estates that once existed in the region. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the connection to the Gama Lobo family is documented, several members of which were prominent in the royal service, especially as secretaries of the Treasury Council.

In the 18th century, it already stood out for its excellent citrus groves, streets lined with wild trees and trellised grapevines. Two wells equipped with norias supplied water for irrigation and to feed three fountains. It also stands out for its tidal lake, which is a rare or almost unique monument in Portuguese hydraulic architecture.

It also has a chapel that was integrated into the palace in the mid-20th century to replace an older one. The interior walls are lined with 18th century tiles and reproductions from this period. In 1952, the palace and the estate's streets underwent several interventions led by the architect Raul Lino, the most notable of which are the tiles from various periods arranged in different parts of the gardens.
