This proposed walk starts in the car park of the Penhas do Marmeleiro Park in Murches and heads towards Cascais, where after passing the Cascais Market, we'll walk along part of the riverside area (Praia dos Pescadores and Praia da Rainha). This is a route full of surprises and beautiful scenery, along the well-organised Ribeira de Vinhas Valley. This is a route that connects the Serra de Sintra to the sea. Another event not to be missed!

Ribeira das Vinhas:

The Ribeira das Vinhas and its adjacent valley is one of the most important ecological corridors in the municipality of Cascais. Originating in the Serra de Sintra, at an altitude of 400 metres, with a north-facing valley and a watershed located in a natural park, the Ribeira das Vinhas helps Cascais benefit from ecosystem services such as air renewal, water circulation and biological connectivity between habitats and species.

As well as being an ecological corridor, this valley has always been used by man, whether to access the Serra de Sintra, or to use the gentler slopes, or to use the force of the water to mill with the watermills or to tread fabrics with the pisões.

The toponymy reveals the shape of the times, how each part of the territory had a function and a name: Ribeira das Vinhas, Marmeleiro, Pisão and Mula represent the collective memory of Cascais and its connection to the Serra de Sintra.

The intervention at the site, which is one of Cascais' main ecological corridors, included the requalification of the riparian gallery, the re-profiling of the bed, the elimination of waste and the preparation of the banks for planting vegetation. Water retention basins were also installed, essential for reducing the risk of flooding. A path that recovers an old tradition and where you can still find sheep grazing. A true nature experience in the middle of an urban area.

Art on the trail:

The Ribeira das Vinhas trail, which starts behind the Mercado da Vila in Cascais, has recently been restored and allows you to walk or cycle for more than 7 kilometres through pine forests, scrubland and vegetable gardens. But what makes this trail unique are the dozens of paintings by artist Tiago Hacke - made on stones or rainwater drainage manholes - depicting animal species found in the municipality, some of which can be seen along the trail.
