Event Description
This event will be a 14-kilometre walk through the Serra de Cabanas, Serra de S. Francisco, Serra do Louro and Quinta do Anjo. We'll also have the opportunity to visit the Artificial Caves of Quinta do Anjo. Another event not to be missed!
Quinta do Anjo caves:
The funerary monument in the Artificial Caves of Quinta do Anjo was identified in the last quarter of the 19th century, circumstantially, during the extraction of limestone at the site, which led to the partial destruction of the necropolis, with greater incision in caves 3 and 4.
Intended for collective burial, the monument consists of four artificial caves, excavated in the soft limestone of Arrábida and used as a necropolis between the late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age. From the vast and remarkable collection of funerary furniture exhumed, the most notable are the large blades (flint), arrowheads, axes and hoes (polished stone), various smooth ceramics (calotte bowls and spherical bowls), bell-shaped ceramics (International Group; Inciso Group and Palmela Group), objects of adornment, cylindrical idols and plaque idols (decorated schist slabs), limestone containers and, of particular note, the campaniform bowls and "Palmela-type" copper points, identified for the first time in these caves and which achieved extensive geographical dispersion through trade contacts with various parts of the Mediterranean world. Classified as a National Monument since 1934.
