Event Description

This proposed walk starts at the Pavilion of the Milharado Cultural and Sports Association and runs from the town centre along rural paths and trails with a high density of landscape and countryside, almost always accompanied by the various windmills that exist in this region, living testimony to their great activity. We'll be travelling through various places in the parish, with different panoramic views, ranging from the majestic Serra do Socorro to the various hills and valleys of the Malveira area. Another event not to be missed!

Millet:

Milharado is today the seat of one of the most prosperous and also most extensive of the current parishes in the municipality of Mafra, from where it is around 18 kilometres away. It used to belong to the old municipality of Enxara dos Cavaleiros, which was abolished by the Decree of 24 October 1855. Its historical roots go back a long way in time, as shown by the remains from various periods of the early and middle Chalcolithic period (between 2500 and 2000 BC), found around 500 metres from where the parish church stands today, and the Neolithic and Roman remains found in the village of Rólia, also close to the parish seat. Nothing is known about the origin of its name, but according to legend: ”A nobleman passing through this area asked a labourer who was sowing corn the name of this place, to which the said labourer replied: - It has no name. When the nobleman saw the labourer sowing maize with a plough, he said: ”From now on it will be called Milho-Arado".

The livestock industry makes the parish one of the main suppliers of pork to the city of Lisbon and other parts of the country, especially sausages from Povoa da Galega, Portugal's second largest sausage-making centre. The parish of Milharado also has vast and complete commerce, as well as an industry represented by various ceramics factories, carpentry, metal-mechanics, transport industry, industrial slaughterhouses, among which is the country's largest pig slaughterhouse.

Its Mother Church, which according to the inscription engraved on the pulpit, was built in 1609. In the churchyard there is a solid stone cross marbled with the centenary mosses of the surrounding area, resting on a quadrangular plinth on the sides of which Biblical themes of the “Passion” are engraved. The church's façade is adorned by a Manueline portal with fine columns and decorated with plant elements. The interior has a single nave with a coffered ceiling. The 18th century altarpiece in the chancel and the tile cladding are noteworthy.

The Mills:

At the top of the mountain that serves as a hillside for its houses, its 170-year-old windmills give the place a mirror of nature, thanks to the marvellous views that can be enjoyed from there, which, combined with the hospitality and friendliness of its people, are the best picture postcard of this beautiful area of the “Saloia Region”.
