This 30-kilometre-long Great Walk takes place in the west of Portugal, more specifically in the Serra do Socorro and Serra da Archeira mountain ranges, full of magnificent landscapes. During this walk we'll have the opportunity to visit some of the forts of the Lines of Torres Vedras, such as Archeira and Feteira, among others. We'll also pass the Termas dos Cucos thermal baths and walk along the banks of the River Sizandro, almost on arrival in Torres Vedras. There will be no shortage of challenging climbs to the top of the Serra do Socorro, before descending towards Furadouro, our starting and finishing point. Another event not to be missed!

Chapel of Our Lady of Socorro

At the top of the Serra do Socorro, the Chapel of Our Lady of Socorro was built at the beginning of the 16th century. Manueline architectural elements are still preserved, namely the porch, the vaulted nave and the south side portal. Given its elevation, it was one of the sites chosen for the installation of a telegraph during the Peninsular War in 1810, allowing communication between the 1st and 2nd Lines of Torres Vedras. The village of Serra do Socorro and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Socorro are classified as a Property of Public Interest. This place hosts an important pilgrimage on 5 August and is also one of the most important natural viewpoints in the Western Region. The Serra do Socorro Interpretive Centre is located in the area next to the Chapel and contains an exhibition area on the History and Heritage of Serra do Socorro, Visual Communications in the Peninsular War and the Serra do Socorro Telegraph.

Archeira Fort

The Archeira Fort, located in a strategic place in the defensive system of the Lines of Torres Vedras (military work no. 128), is a large structure that belonged to the First Defensive Line, along with the forts of Catefica and Feiteira, located a little further north, whose purpose was the defence of the Ribaldeira and Runa valleys. With a perimeter of 436.48 metres and an area of around 9,534.44 square metres, it was equipped with six fire hydrants (12 calibre) and a garrison of 500 men. Although it had no gunboats, inside there are traces of what appears to be a half-buried powder magazine. It is part of the group of Fortifications of the Lines of Torres Vedras classified as a National Monument.

Feiteira Fort

The medium-sized Feiteira Fort (military building no. 129) has a perimeter of 287.5 metres and an area of around 5,901 square metres. It was equipped with 13 cannons, six fire hydrants (six 9 calibre and three 12 calibre) and a garrison of 350 men. The moat has a masonry escarpment and counter-escarpment and well-defined interior traverses with masonry bedding. It is part of the set of Fortifications of the Lines of Torres Vedras classified as a National Monument.

Catefica Fort

The Catefica Fort is part of the First Line of Defence and is located to the north of the Feiteira and Archeira Forts. Military work no. 130, it is a small structure made up of 15 gunboats and traverses, with a mill inside that was probably used as a powder magazine. It is part of the set of Fortifications of the Lines of Torres Vedras classified as a National Monument.

Windmills

The windmill with a fixed tower made of masonry and a drawbar is the most characteristic type of windmill in the western region. The cylindrical building is a sturdy stone and lime construction with a base about five and a half metres in diameter and four and a half metres high. The top is covered with a wooden structure made of planks, burlap or canvas, coated with tar - the capelo. Inside, we can see the sarilho, a mechanism that allows the top of the mill and the mast to rotate according to the direction of the wind. The mast is made up of eight cloth sails and around twelve to fifteen whelks.
