Event Description
In this event dedicated to the Water Cycle in Lisbon, we propose a route that includes a guided tour of the Galeria do Loreto, entering at the Mãe d'Água Reservoir in Amoreiras and leaving at the Miradouro de S. Pedro de Alcântara, covering a distance of 1.6 kilometres. The tour lasts approximately 1h 30m. The visit will be followed by the usual walk (see description below).
Loreto Gallery:
The Galeria do Loreto was one of the five galleries that made up the Águas Livres Aqueduct system. Its length, completely buried, was 2,835 metres and included all the branches.
Galeria do Loreto has the following underground route:
- Starts at Casa do Registo, next to the Mãe d'Água das Amoreiras Reservoir, in Rua das Amoreiras
- It descends on the same alignment as Rua das Amoreiras to Largo do Rato
- Passage on the same alignment as Rua da Escola Politécnica
- Crossing on the same alignment as Rua D. Pedro V
- Continue along Rua da Misericórdia
- Cross Largo do Chiado
- Continue along Rua Paiva de Andrade
- Ends at Largo de São Carlos
Next to the former Colégio dos Nobres, now the Natural History Museum, there was a basin from which water flowed to the Imprensa Régia and the Chafariz do Monte Olivete (former Chafariz do Arco de São Bento) and, on the alignment with Travessa da Mãe d'Água, there was a square stonework basin, called Pia do Penalva, where the water that went to the Aqueduto do Século (Formosa) and the Aqueduto da Praça da Alegria (Cotovia) was separated, the extension of which supplied a fountain on the public promenade.
This gallery supplied a number of public establishments, including the National Press, the Passeio Público, the Misericórdia, the S. Pedro de Alcântara retreat, the Passeio de S. Pedro de Alcântara and the Carmo Municipal Guard Barracks.
Walking:
After leaving from the Miradouro de S. Pedro de Alcântara, we'll take a walk to places such as: Bairro Alto, Igreja de Santa Catarina, S. Bento, Jardim e Basílica da Estrela, Largo do Rato and Jardim das Amoreiras.
