This proposal from Caminhando consists of a walk to (re)discover Centenary Trees in Lisbon Gardens. Some came by boat from the hands of adventurers and extravagant botanists during the Age of Discovery, others are descendants of the dinosaurs and most are rooted in the popular culture of many countries on five continents.

In gardens as illustrious as they are simple, a series of centenary trees, both exotic and indigenous, await our visit on a route that starts at Cais do Sodré and ends at Praça da Alegria. Another event not to be missed!

Cais do Sodré - Roque Gameiro Garden

Let's get to know two species of exotic trees from South America. The Jacaranda trees and the Tipuanas, In the months of May and June, they present Lisbon with their violet and golden yellow flowers. And who knows Magnolia, considered one of the oldest trees in the world, is also in bloom.

Rua do Alecrim

Here we find two palm trees Clogs of the female species, with abundant orange hair, from the Middle East. Of prehistoric origin, palm trees are therefore considered fossils and not trees. A group of Stone pines here they rest from the times when their wood and resin were the raw material of excellence in the fleet of many ships and caravels.

Rua do Século

Two Lodons trees from southern Europe flank the outer enclosure of the Marquis of Pombal's family residence. One of the most common trees in Lisbon's streets due to the dense and broad freshness of its foliage, longevity and resistance. It was also the favourite tree of the poet Eugénio de Andrade.

Príncipe Real Garden

Here we find the oldest tree in Lisbon, a Cedar of Buçaco 140 years old, the fruit of several generations of gardeners. A Oriental plane tree, The tree, a 1956 gift from King Paul of Greece to the city of Lisbon, also reminds us of its kinship with the millenary tree where the physician Hippocrates used to consult in ancient times. The same garden is home to other species, including a Columnar Araucaria of the Pacific islands discovered in 1774 by Captain James Cook and a Ginkgo originally from the Far East.

Praça da Alegria - Jardim Alfredo Keil

An encounter with a Metrosider, a tree from New Zealand that is sacred to the Maori people, leaves you in awe as soon as you arrive due to its giant, suspended aerial roots. And finally two more Erythrins and two Paineiras Centenarian trees, native to South America, with their leafy blooms invite us to enjoy the last garden on our itinerary.
