This proposal from Caminhando consists of a walk to learn about the connection and importance that water had from 16th century Lisbon to the 19th century, as an essential resource that generated disputes over consumption and sale, while at the same time energising trades. We set off from the medieval Borratém Well, located in the city centre, to finish our journey at the Barbadinhos steam pumping station, which, by collecting water from further away and on a larger scale, allowed it to become an increasingly accessible commodity. Borratém Well

Located in the My Story Hotel Tejo, it was one of the main sources of water for the population and activities in 16th century Lisbon, due to its proximity to Rossio, the former Hospital Real de Todos os Santos and the Church of S. Domingos. The name derives from the Arabic word “ber atten”, meaning well of the fig tree.

Praça do Comércio

It symbolises the inseparable union between the city and the Tagus. It was chosen by King Manuel I to build the Royal Palace, whose foundations were only made possible by the time-consuming work of filling in an area that had previously been flooded by a stream flowing down Avenida da Liberdade.

El Rei Fountain

One of Lisbon's oldest fountains and the first that forced legislation on the consumption and sale of water by social and economic groups to put an end to disputes over a commodity that is not always abundant.

Fountains and streets of Alfama

We're going to uncover the heritage and toponymy of Alfama's natural springs, which in times gone by gave rise to crafts and promised therapeutic qualities, and which still beautify the fountains and corners of the neighbourhood today.

Barbadinhos steam pumping station

Inaugurated in 1880, it represents the last phase of the hydraulic development of the Águas Livres Aqueduct. It made it possible to triple the water supply by collecting water from the River Alviela and distributing it to four reservoirs (Verónica, Penha de França, Arco and Campo de Ourique), finally ensuring a water supply to the city's highest points.
