Event Description
In this event we'll get to know the Buddhist Monastery of Sumedhãrãma through a guided tour by one of its resident monks. Don't miss out on this visit to an unknown place on the outskirts of Lisbon. With this visit we'll learn about the history, traditions and way of life of this community.
The institution “Forest Theravada Buddhism - Religious Community” was officially recognised as a Religious Legal Person under the ‘Religious Freedom Act’, with the NIPC 592010040 in July 2010. The main objective is to promote the Teaching of the Lord Buddha through the establishment and support of a residence for Buddhist monks.
This non-profit religious community (Sangha) was established in
The monks invited to lead this movement follow the traditional training of the Buddhist scriptures (Vinaya) in the line of the Thai Forest Tradition of Wat Nong Pah Pong monastery, which was founded by Ajahn Chah. This tradition was brought out of Thailand by Ajahn Sumedho and other Western disciples. The contact that people establish with the monastic community will help to cultivate generosity, virtue and wisdom both in individuals and in society in general. This is how beings can be liberated.
Mendicant monastic life depends on people's goodwill for material needs. The monks began living in Lisbon in July 2012.
The practice of ceremonies and rituals at the Theravada Buddhist Monastery of the Forest Tradition is only possible with the presence of monks. Meditation is the main spiritual practice of the monk's daily rule and discipline. Buddhist meditation methods can be practised by both monks and lay people on an individual basis. Meditation retreats are also held frequently from the end of the year to the end of the year.
