The Eurostars Museum

The Eurostars Museum is the third hotel in the Eurostars chain in Lisbon. However, it has the particularity of being a museum as well as a hotel, and we'll be taking a guided tour, accompanied by expert archaeologists, of the unique finds that we'll see throughout the five-star hotel. Excavations at the former Palacio Coculim (also known as “the burnt-out palace”, which in the 20th century became the home of Armazéns Sommer) have unearthed remains dating back to the Iron Age, through Roman and Arab occupation and into the 20th century. The first excavations were carried out between 2004 and 2005 and there were already signs of occupation of this site since the Romans.

On this visit you'll be able to see a room of almost 40m2 of a domus, a typical Roman residential building, with a mosaic floor from the 2nd or 3rd century and the largest in situ mosaic discovered so far in the city of Lisbon. In the centre you can also see a mosaic of Venus reaching for her sandal, representing an ancient Roman myth. Also noteworthy are a slab that was part of a Roman street, a fountain tank and a well that was used for a thousand years, specifically from the 4th to the 15th century.

Below the domus area is the hotel's wine cellar, which curiously used to be the palace's tavern. Here you can appreciate several moments in time: part of the Roman wall, of a defensive nature, which is abutted by an Islamic structure. Next to the restaurant you can see a wall with an Islamic tower built in a corner of the Roman wall.

In the museum centre, there are many objects recovered during the excavations, from an amphora dating from between the 7th and 6th centuries BC to a bank book from the Sommer Warehouses, as well as a collection of measuring cups that could have belonged to a shop that operated on the ground floor of the palace between the 17th and 18th centuries. From the same establishment there is also thought to be a charred barrel full of pipes, which have since been restored, from the four corners of the world.
