Event Description
In this event we'll get to know the town of Santiago do Escoural, as well as the surrounding area, which is characterised by a green landscape of cork oak forests, with the Serra de Monfurado as one of its landmarks. We'll visit the town's streets, with their characteristic chimneys, and walk through part of the Serra de Monfurado, past inhabited mounds and still-working coal ovens, the famous Fonte Ferrenha and the old mining site of Terra das Freiras. Another event not to be missed!
Santiago do Escoural
Santiago do Escoural is a village in the municipality of Montemor-o-Novo with a rich mining history that stretches back centuries and an enchanting natural beauty. It is a destination that invites visitors to explore its stunning landscapes and immerse themselves in its unique culture. Its settlements are Escoural (the parish seat), Casa Branca, São Brissos and Biscaia, covering an area of 138.93 km².
The highlight of Santiago do Escoural is undoubtedly the remarkable Escoural Archaeological Site, which houses caves with cave paintings and archaeological remains dating back to prehistoric times. These surprising artistic manifestations and testimonies from the past offer a fascinating insight into the lives of the region's first inhabitants and are a must-see for history and archaeology lovers. There is also a vast religious heritage in the parish, such as the ruins of the old convent of Nossa Senhora do Castelo dos Monges, the churches of Santiago do Escoural and São Brissos, both 16th century buildings, as well as the anta do Livramento, an ancient megalithic monument converted into a Christian hermitage. The characteristic feature of the urban image is the imposing presence of chimneys, some disproportionately huge in relation to the building on which they stand, bringing other rhythms to the streets, some of them displaying their antiquity through the date inscribed and framed by decorative paintings.
In addition to its rich historical heritage, Santiago do Escoural also has a rich landscape between the Serra de Monfurado and the Alentejo Plain, vast Natura 2000 classified areas, as well as the genuine architectural beauty of the town and villages. The green fields, rolling hills and peaceful surroundings create the perfect setting for outdoor activities. Hiking, cycling and picnics are just some of the options for enjoying the serenity and beauty of the region.
Culture and Gastronomy
Of enormous value, it is intimately linked to the dehesa landscape, in which the products created to the natural rhythm of what the land offers shine. Among the most famous dishes are the migas pork, o Portuguese Alentejo stew, the butters, a filleted dogfish soup, o lamb stew, and the tomato soups, purslane, among others.
