Event Description

This Christmas Walk will allow us to experience all the magic of Christmas in the always enchanting town of Sintra. Thus, along a route of around 7 kilometres in length, we will pass through the most beautiful illuminated streets, from the Portela de Sintra area to São Pedro, not forgetting the Palácio da Vila area, Volta do Duche, historic alleys and panoramic views of the town. Another event not to be missed!

During our tour we will make a stop so that those who so wish can savour some of Sintra's most famous delicacies...

Sintra's Travesseiros and Queijadas

This sweet is one of the ex-libris of the town of Sintra and makes the reputation of “Piriquita”, an old Sintra bakery founded in 1862. At the time, Amaro dos Santos, a baker by trade, and his wife, Constância Gomes, worked there. The name Piriquita came from the nickname that King Carlos I gave Constância Gomes because she was a woman of short stature.

It was King Carlos I himself who encouraged the couple to make queijadas, a sweet he regularly consumed during his summers in Sintra. The success was enormous and the bakery soon became a pastry shop.

Years later, in the 1940s, while much of the world was at war, a new treasure was born in Sintra. Constância Luísa Cunha, the founder's daughter, felt the need to innovate and, while reading an old recipe book, found the recipe for Travesseiro, which today is such a hit with visitors to the village.

The original recipe hides a secret ingredient that the family that runs Piriquita has never revealed to anyone.
