This proposed walk starts at Praça Dom Fernando II, in São Pedro de Penaferrim (Sintra), the site of the famous market that always takes place on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. The route runs along the slopes of the Moorish Castle to the Santa Eufémia viewpoint, passing through Vila Sassetti, Penedo da Amizade and the Quinta da Regaleira area.

Santa Eufémia Viewpoint

The Miradouro de Santa Eufémia is located in Santa Eufémia da Serra, at around 470 metres, offering a beautiful view over the municipality of Sintra from Queluz to the ocean. This is the most remotely inhabited place in the Sintra mountains, probably since around 4000 BC.

According to the chronicles of the Crusades dating back to 1147, the water coming from the fountain of St Euphemia had healing powers, which is why the hermitage of St Euphemia was built in the 13th century and became a place of pilgrimage and devotion.

In Santa Eufémia da Serra there was also a temple dedicated to the Moon, with a tribune and a bandstand in the churchyard that served as worship spaces.

The Penedo of Friendship

Penedo da Amizade, a granite cliff about 45 metres high, is located on the western slope of Castelo dos Mouros and is one of the oldest climbing sites in Portugal. It is very popular all year round, both with individual climbers and with military forces, clubs and nature tourism companies. The existing routes vary in difficulty from beginner to high level.

The Moorish Castle

Located on one of the peaks overlooking the Sintra mountains, the Moorish Castle is a fortification built around the 10th century after the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula. Two belts of walls irregularly contour the granite blocks of the mountain, between cliffs and over steep cliffs. Along the roundabout paths you can admire a unique landscape that shows, in the foreground, the town, the Paço de Sintra, the Pena Palace and the mountains and, beyond them, the extensive plain to the north and the Atlantic Ocean.

The Vila Sassetti Route

Vila Sassetti is part of the Sintra Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located on the northern slope of the mountain in a narrow strip of land, with an area of approximately 12,000 metres.²of which around 200m² correspond to the building complex made up of the main building, the Casa do Caseiro and the ancillary buildings. The main building is distinguished by its central three-storey circular tower, from which other bodies of varying geometry extend, using Sintra granite as the main exterior cladding, terracotta bands characteristic of the Lombard Romanesque style and various pieces from the principal's antique collection. The garden, designed by the architect Luigi Manini, endeavours to follow a naturalistic aesthetic and is structured by a winding path that is crossed by an artificial water line. The garden expresses the harmonious relationship between architecture and landscape, which thus seem to merge naturally.

Victor Carlos Sassetti (1851-1915), owner of the Hotel Braganza in Lisbon and the Hotel Victor in Sintra, was the original owner of the land where Vila Sassetti is now located. The project was commissioned from his friend, architect and set designer Luigi Manini (1848-1936), and the main building, a revivalist pleasure house designed for summer living, was built between 1890 and 1894. After the owner's death, the villa was leased to Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian between 1920 and 1955, who occupied it sporadically until the year of his death. Between 1955 and 1958, the then owner Isabel Armanda Luísa Real built the Casa do Caseiro, enlarging the main building and adding the current east body and sanitary facilities. In 1984, the new owner, Sara Gabriel Teixeira Albergaria, carried out some refurbishment work on the villa and the garden.
