Event details

Event Description

This proposed walk starts at the Sobral de Monte Agraço picnic area and takes in rural paths and trails with landscapes typical of the Western region, rich in beauty and history, such as the various Forts and Redoubts of the Lines of Defence of Torres Vedras. Our walk will be complemented by a visit to the Igreja Matriz de S. Quintino, with its Manueline portal and interior lined with magnificent tile panels.  Another event not to be missed!

Alqueidão Fort

At an altitude of 439 metres, let yourself be enveloped by the majestic landscape. Your gaze crosses the 1st and 2nd Lines of Defence. From the Tagus to the Atlantic, you can see several fortifications whose information panels will help you interpret them. The visitor is now at the heart of a military architectural complex that is unrivalled in Europe. You'll easily understand why the geographical position of Alqueidão was the centre of Wellesley's defensive strategy, making it the Command Post of the Lines.
Its construction, which began on 4 November 1809, covered an area of 3.5 hectares and included a wide variety of military structures (armouries, fire hydrants, small redoubts and beams). Given its mission, it was the only one garrisoned with line troops, with General Pack's brigade in October 1810 and, by decision of William Beresford, it had the exceptional creation of two artillery companies of orderlies - the Artillery Companies of the Village of Sobral.
Descend from the observatory and finish your visit by passing the armouries and the governor's house, and don't forget to notice the beams, still visible in the terrain and the steep slopes of the gunboats.

St Quentin

The parish of Santo Quintino has a long history, with moments of greater prominence alternating with periods of routine activity, among the first we can highlight the time of the Napoleonic invasions, when, in 1810, General Massena's troops, on finding the Forte Grande de Alqueidão, an impassable stronghold of the Lines of Torres Vedras, withdrew with their horde of 70,000 soldiers.

In addition to this important defensive action as part of the “defence away from Lisbon”, which brought an end to the Peninsular War, we have the year 1385 as a point of reference, with the enlargement of the term of Lisbon granted by King João I. At that time, the parish was called Nossa Senhora da Piedade e Santo Quintino, a name that coincided with that given to the parish church, whose name was shortened in the last quarter of the 18th century, perhaps by usage, but first written down by Vicar João Ferreira de Oliveira.

In 1836, the parish was incorporated into the municipality of Sobral de Monte Agraço and the district of Torres Vedras by a new administrative division.

On 13 January 1898, the boundaries of the parish were defined, which still exist today.
