Event Description

This walk starts next to the car park of the Peninha Sanctuary, in the heart of the Sintra mountains. Discover inner peace and connect with nature on a guided walk with meditation, at sunset, in the area surrounding the Peninha Sanctuary in Sintra. Leave behind the stresses and strains of daily life and embark on a journey of self-discovery and serenity. During this guided walk with an experienced meditation instructor (introduction to the Vipassana tradition), you will enjoy moments of silence and introspection as you walk through this magical forest.

Let your senses guide you in this unique environment and feel the energy of nature in a transformative experience suitable for all ages. At the points of interest there is a brief explanation of the place (history and legends). At the end, you'll find a sense of inner peace and well-being that will stay with you for a long time. Another event not to be missed!

Meditation:

Introduction to Vipassana meditation, a deep meditation technique rooted in the Buddhist tradition. Vipassana means “clear vision” or “special perception”. This form of meditation has been practised for thousands of years to achieve a deeper understanding of the mind and reality.

The Vipassana meditation technique involves the systematic and direct observation of physical and mental sensations that constantly arise and disappear. By observing these sensations with equanimity, without attachment or aversion, it is possible to develop a deeper understanding of impermanence, dissatisfaction and the absence of a permanent self.

Practitioners sit quietly in a comfortable position and direct their attention to the breath and the physical sensations of the body. Over time, this practice of objective observation helps develop clear awareness and a deep understanding of the impermanent and interconnected nature of all things. It is a tool for personal development and improving consciousness.

Peninha Sanctuary:

At an altitude of 488 metres, the Peninha Sanctuary enchants with its magic and unshakeable mystique. Built out of popular devotion, the Chapel of Our Lady of Penha (Peninha) is the result of a supposed apparition of Our Lady to a poor shepherdess. This architectural complex also includes the secular chapel of São Saturnino, founded by D. Pêro Pais at the time of the formation of the kingdom of Portugal and now abandoned, an enigmatic romantic-revivalist palace that resembles a fortification, built in 1918 by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (owner of Quinta da Regaleira) and the current chapel, which dates back to the 17th century and was founded by Friar Pedro da Conceição.

Legend of Peninha:

According to legend, Our Lady of Peninha appeared to a deaf and mute shepherdess who was out on the hills guarding her cattle. A sheep had wandered off up the mountain, and the girl ran after it. The shepherdess found Our Lady of Peninha in a cave and was cured of her deafness and dumbness.

Forest of Silence:

Bosque do Silêncio is a mysterious and enchanting place in the Serra de Sintra. It's a wood that stretches over a dense, cool area and is a popular place for hiking. There are several routes you can take in the woods, with different levels of difficulty. The most popular route starts next to the Peninha Sanctuary and offers excellent views of the entire coastline
