Event Description

This proposed walk starts next to the Colares Regional Winery. The route takes place in an area of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, and briefly allows you to get to know the interior of this area, where you will have the opportunity to walk through land planted with vines of the famous “Ramisco” grape variety. The route continues in the direction of Praia da Aguda, before passing Janas and its circular chapel. Then, along beautiful trails, we'll reach the picturesque “Azenhas do Mar”, an old fishing village. A walk not to be missed by all nature lovers.

Chapel of Windows
The rural Ermida de São Mamede de Janas, located in the village of São Mamede de Janas, in the municipality of Sintra, is a beautiful church, famous for its religious festivities in honour of São Mamede.
This is a region of ancient human occupation, and it is even said that the temple was built on top of an earlier Roman building, part of which is still visible as what is thought to have been the “podium”. In fact, some argue that the building predates the Roman presence in the area.
The current configuration probably dates from the late 16th or even 17th century, in a circular structure, attributed by many to the famous Francisco d'Ollanda, but without any confirmation.
The outer porch is one of the rural landmarks of many temples in the Sintra region, attached to half of the chapel, with three buttresses. A geophysical survey carried out in August 2011 indicates that the main building of the Roman temple, rectangular and large, is buried there, a little behind the site where the work is now taking place. “This site is an egg of history, spanning different civilisational eras and cults over more than a millennium,” sums up Cardim Ribeiro.

Aguda Beach
A sea beach with a stretch of sand of around 500 metres, reached by a staircase that is difficult to access. On the left-hand side, there are numerous caneiros, which are an excellent spot for bass fishing.
Being very close and bordering Praia do Magoito, you can take a walk along the cliffs and enjoy the view. It's a wild beach that doesn't always have the same amount of sand.

Azenhas do Mar
It is one of the most popular beaches, although its sand does not exceed 30 metres, and even those few metres depend a lot on the winter, which determines the length of the sand each year, but the ocean pool delights visitors. A former fishing village, in recent decades it has become a peaceful holiday resort and the inspiration for many painters such as Júlio Pomar.
